Aluminum Sub-micron Superconducting Hot- Electron Bolometer Mixers
We report on microwave measurements of superconducting aluminum hot-electron bolometers (Al HEBs). Diffusion-cooled Al HEB mixers are ideal candidates for space-borne and terrestrial remote-sensing applications in the Terahertz frequency range since they are predicted to have small local oscillator (LO) power requirements, intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidths ! 10 GHz, and a noise temperature...
متن کاملMgB2 hot-electron bolometer mixers for THz heterodyne instruments
In this work we present experimental investigation of the MgB2 hot-electron bolometer (HEB) for low noise mixing at terahertz frequencies. A dedicated MgB2 thin film deposition system was designed and constructed based on Hybrid Physical-Chemical Deposition. Films as thin as 15nm have a superconducting transition at 35K, with a critical current density >107 A/cm2 (at 4.2K) in bridges as narrow ...
متن کاملMgB2 Hot-Electron Bolometer Mixers at Terahertz Frequencies
In this paper we compare the performance of MgB2 Hot-Electron Bolometer Mixers operating at Local Oscillator frequencies of 0.6 THz and 1.63 THz. The minimum noise temperatures that were obtained are 700 K and 1150 K for 0.6 THz and 1.63THz respectively. The receiver noise bandwidth is of the order of 2.2-3GHz for 10nm thick HEB devices with a Tc of 8.5K. Sub-micrometer size HEBs were also fabr...

Critical Temperature Dependence of High Frequency Electron Dynamics in Superconducting Hot-Electron Bolometer Mixers Irfan Siddiqi May, 2002 Superconducting diffusion-cooled hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixers are ideal candidates for use in terahertz heterodyne spectroscopy (THz). This thesis investigates mixer performance as a function of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). In th...
متن کاملNoise in Current-Commutating CMOS Mixers
A noise analysis of current-commutating CMOS mixers, such as the widely used CMOS Gilbert cell, is presented. The contribution of all internal and external noise sources to the output noise is calculated. As a result, the noise figure can be rapidly estimated by computing only a few parameters or by reading them from provided normalized graphs. Simple explicit formulas for the noise introduced ...
